Indexed Universal Life is permanent life insurance first, with potential cash value credited through selected index strategies rather than direct stock-market investment. Any tax-advantaged access depends on the policy being properly structured, funded and managed over decades. A useful review examines death benefit design, funding, MEC limits, policy charges, surrender considerations, crediting assumptions and loan management. Not everyone should own an Americo IUL: if you need coverage only for a defined period, term is cheaper and simpler, and if the premium would strain your cash flow in a slow year, the policy is unlikely to survive long enough to work.

An IUL’s cash value may generally be accessed through withdrawals or policy loans, but “cashing out” can mean different things. A full surrender ends the policy and may involve surrender charges or taxable income, especially when outstanding loans exist. Withdrawals and loans can reduce cash value, death benefits, and policy strength. The policy must remain in force, and tax treatment depends on the contract and circumstances.
